Walter Cronkite Awards Acceptance SpeechSpecial Commendation for EnterpriseLilia Luciano, ABC10, Sacramento, CA, the Tegna-owned ABC affiliate, is commended for her work in “Puerto Rico Rises,” a four-part special on the U.S. territory in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. The jury recognized her efforts to personalize the story of Puerto Rico’s rocky recovery and to tell it to viewers in a distant media market. “It is impossible not to watch this story,” the jury said, citing the pacing and immersive journalistic approach. “This piece takes viewers into the eye of two storms — one of nature, and one political,” they said.
Puerto Rico RisesI hope it helps open your eyes and your heart to just a few of the struggles Puerto Ricans have endured before and after Hurricane María. María, "La Revolucionaria" as Irene Vilar-Grandbois called the storm, lifted the veil that we so diligently held up to cover our inequality, our poverty and the racism and abuse of power that have perpetuated those conditions for our us as a People. La Colonia is now there for everyone to see. It is up to us, Los Puertorriqueños, los de la isla y los de la diáspora to build our infrastructure, our power, our food, to be the architects of our future, and raise our voice and our vote for social, civil, economic and environmental justice for Puerto Rico. We have impacted the history and greatness of America, it's time to own our own.

Louisiana's Coastal Crisis: Oil And Water
Catch and Release - TEGNA & The Outline“Catch and release” actually refers to catching immigrants at the border and deporting/releasing them immediately to Mexico. It’s an awfully dehumanizing term that is also being used mistakenly to describe the practice of processing people and releasing them within the US as opposed to keeping them detained as they await their day in court to ask for asylum. To get an idea of who these families are, we I followed some parents and their children as they traveled by bus to meet family members and friends waiting for them in cities across the country.
